Do you have tight spots in your muscles that are sore to the touch? These trigger points are commonly referred to as “knots” and can cause pain and limit how well your muscles function.
Dry needling is a technique used to help your muscles function correctly and relieve the pain associated with these tight spots or knots, and is often used with other treatments including Osteopathy and Remedial Massage.
As the name implies, “dry” needles (without any medication) are inserted into areas of muscle. It is very effective in relieving local muscular pain and improving muscle function by restoring the muscle’s ability to lengthen and shorten normally.
It does not replace a hands on therapy. The needles only stay in for five to eight minutes, with hands on techniques completing the rest of the treatment.
It works by releasing myofascial trigger points in the muscles, commonly known as “knots” and refers to a group of muscles that have shortened when activated but have not returned to their normal length afterwards.
Knotted muscles can develop for a number of reasons including injury, sport, unexpected or sudden movements, poor sustained posture, nutritional deficiencies, stress or illness.
Dry needling is recommended for:
Both treatments involve inserting thin needles into certain parts of the body.
An ancient Chinese medical tradition, during an acupuncture session, needles are inserted into points along meridian lines which represent the body’s organs. The aim is to balance and restore proper flow of energy throughout the body.
For dry needling, the needles are inserted into trigger points, or tender bands of muscle located within larger muscles. When needles are inserted into trigger points, they “release” the muscle and restore normal function and movement.
